Academic Session

The academic session consist of two semesters as follows
First Semester                         September – December
Second Semester                     February – May June

A semester consists of sixteen (16) weeks, structured as follows:

  • Thirteen (13) weeks of instruction
  • One (1) week of revision and
  • Two (2) weeks of examinations

Course Loads

Regular / Full Time Students
When a student enrolls in any course for credit, the maximum load for a semester shall be 15 credit hours.

Part Time Students

Any student enrolled in courses with less than 15 credit hours shall be considered a part-time student.

Program of Study

In consultation with the major advisor, each student is required to outline a program of study for the desired degree, on the appropriate form provided by the Graduate School Association’s Vice President for Academic Affairs. One copy of the program study, signed by the student and major advisor, must be filed with the Graduate School Association’s Vice President. The change of program or personnel form may also be obtained from the same office.

Transfer Credit

A student may be allowed the maximum of six graduate credit hours (B average) from another fully accredited college or university.

Credit Hour

One credit hour shall be interpreted as one hour of instruction; thus, a 3 credit-hour course shall meet 3 hours per week.
Code and Numbers
All graduate degree courses shall carry letter and number codes beginning with four letters indicating a department or subject, followed by a three-digit number as follows:  
500-599/600-699
The third digit in the number code shall consist of the following:

  • Zero (0), indicating a course offered in Semesters I and II and
  • Odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9), indicating a course offered in Semester I and
  • Even number (2, 4, 6 or 8), indicating a course offered in Semester II.

Since graduate instructions assumes that the student has both the interest and the ability to do independent study and research of outstanding quality, a graduate student must maintain a minimum average of “B” (3.00 quality point on a 4.00 point system) in all the graduate work. Grades less than “C” are counted in compiling the general average, but will not be included in the requirements for the degree.

Admission to Candidacy for the Master’s Degree

Admission to candidacy is an important step in the candidate’s programs toward the degree. Admission is required before a student may enroll in thesis writing courses, begin thesis or project writing, or take the comprehensive examinations. Degree aspirants must be admitted to candidacy after they complete all prerequisites and earn at least ten (10) semester hours of graduate credits. Failure to be admitted to candidacy after ten (10) hours could result in the student’s having to do additional credit hours.

Procedure
After a student completes ten (10) semester hours of graduate credits with a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 and has removed all incompletes (I – grades) from the permanent record in the Office of Admissions and Records, the student is ready to be admitted to candidacy.

            Steps

  • Pick up these two forms – Admission to Candidacy and Program of Study
  • Obtain a current transcript from the Office of Admission and Record; attach the transcript to the candidacy form.
  • In consultation with the major advisor, fill out both forms: Admission to Candidacy and Program of Study
  • Set all required signatures on both forms
  • Return the Admission to Candidacy form with the transcript attached and the Program of Study form to the Office of the Coordinator

“I” Grade Exception

All enrollments in thesis or project writing courses, except the last shall be entered on the permanent records as “I”. Only the last enrollment shall carry the letter grade and the number of credit hours earned.

Residency Requirements

All candidates for the Master’s degree must spend two full semesters of study in residence at the Cuttington University graduate School after full admission to the specific Graduate School. Transfer credits allowed may not reduce the time required in residence.
